Learn2Change Online Talk:The Impact of the Suspension of USAID on Sustainability and Democracy
The new U.S. administration under Donald Trump has frozen funding for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), causing significant turmoil in international development cooperation. USAID has focused on key areas such as global healthcare, food security, poverty reduction, provision of emergency aid, education, and strengthening of democratic institutions. Before Trump’s recent decision, the United States was the world’s largest donor, financing 47 percent of global humanitarian aid in 2024.
The 90-day suspension of USAID funding has already had severe consequences. International aid organisations report that countless humanitarian programs are directly and indirectly affected by the halt and achievement of recent decades of work towards sustainability, justice and democracy are jeopardized. It remains uncertain whether these programs will resume after 90 days.
